Solar Panel Cleaning

solar panel cleaningSolar systems have become extremely popular on the Big Island. This is a big step in allowing our state to move away from fossil fuels and save business and homeowners money at the same time. Although solar panels are virtually maintenance-free for decades they should be cleaned periodically for optimum efficiency.
In the Puna, Hilo and Hamakua areas with abundant rainfall moss, algae and mildew have a way of attaching to everything. This usually starts at the lower portion of the frame and creeps up the panel. Although the dirty lower portion is evident from a distant observation a lighter film has covered the entire textured panel from top to bottom reducing sun penetration and solar energy output.

On the Leeward side of the big island including South Kona, Kailua and North and South Kohala a different set of factors affect panels. South Kona and Kailua-Kona both have steep slopes of Hualalai mountain. This allows plant debris, dust and pollen to easily blow from above and settle on the panels. The afternoon rain showers wash this to the bottom of the framework and algae and accumulation of materials can cover your panels in a film that gets baked on in the sun.

In North and South Kohala the wind and dust it carries accumulates on panels. This consistent assault of wind, dust and occasional rain add up to a thick layer that can often be overlooked. Although hard to see from below once a closer inspection is done it’s apparent. Although the Big Island has a wide range of climates, each has factors that affect the performance of solar panels over time. Just imagine parking a car in your yard for years without cleaning. In a short amount of time the Hilo, Hamakua and Puna people would see algae, mildew and mold everywhere. The Kona and Kohala people would see dust so thick looking through the glass would be a challenge. Your panels are no different and do need periodic cleaning.

We use our purified water cleaning method to access and clean your panels. This method allows us to clean all the interior panels of your array without ever walking or putting weight on them. Our carbon fiber extension pole uses only purified water that will not affect the landscaping plants or water catchment systems. No abrasives, detergents or chemicals are used ever.
